Understanding God’s unwarranted Gifts of Goodness

Personal reflections from a fellow traveler.  Not AA approved literature.  Shared in the Spirit of Experience, Strength, and Hope.

Thankfully Grace is not a foreign concept to me.  I can look back on times in my life where Grace flowed abundantly, unbeknownst to me at the time.  I can see where I was pardoned, protected, and preserved, preparing me for today.

Grace can best be described as an unearned favor – goodness, mercy, or kindness given freely rather than deserved. 

When I think of Grace, I like to envision the God of my understanding watering the earth.  The rain falls on both the grass and the grain, the wildflowers and the weeds, quenching the thirst of all and sustaining nature.

Today I can see there were times when I was little more than a weed, producing no meaningful harvest, only drawing from the soil around me.  The rain never refused me.

Grace continued to fall upon me, not because I had earned it or become useful, but because Grace is given according to the nature of the giver, not the worthiness of the one upon whom it falls.

Today I can gleefully greet Grace with gratitude. 

It’s not warranted.  I haven’t earned it.  I don’t deserve it - yet it falls in abundance.
